About The Conference

Yulkuum-Jerrang: 2nd Indigenous Economic Development Conference
27 - 29 May 2009, The Sebel Albert Park
This Conference was the second Indigenous Economic Development Forum to be hosted in Melbourne. It follows on from the successful, inaugural KBN Indigenous Economic Development Conference held in 2007. It provided key stakeholders who have an interest in and involvement with Indigenous economic development and business growth with an opportunity to share perspectives and increase opportunities for doing business.
The three-day program brought together Indigenous entrepreneurs and the broader Indigenous business community, government agencies, the academic community, community based organisations, the corporate sector and the wider business community to:
- explore new and innovative opportunities in the field of Indigenous economic development
- stimulate business growth and employment within the Indigenous community through cooperation, networking and sharing business and industry information
- celebrate the successes and learn valuable insights from Indigenous entrepreneurs and business operators
- provide showcasing opportunities for Indigenous businesses
- challenge delegates to improve the current landscape leading to increased Indigenous participation in Victoria’s and Australia’s vibrant economies
- discuss how economic empowerment can overcome Indigenous disadvantage
- increase knowledge about investment and financing opportunities
- facilitate learning opportunities through business workshops, and
- provide a platform for the voices of Indigenous youth.
Thank You
The Koori Business Network (KBN), along with the Conference organising committee, would like to thank everyone involved in the successful delivery of Yulkuum-Jerrang: 2nd Indigenous Economic Development Conference held between 27 - 29 May 2009 at the Sebel Albert Park.
Yulkuum-Jerrang, Victoria's second state-wide forum devoted to facilitating Indigenous economic development opportunities was a great success. Over three days the Conference opened doors to business and partnership opportunities, and provided much valuable information and inspiration for building and consolidating Indigenous economic prosperity.
With the rich and diverse conference program, supported by a dynamic social and entertainment program showcasing wonderful Indigenous performers, the Conference has received favorable feedback from everyone involved.
There were many, many highlights during the conference that participants will remember for a long time! From the compelling keynote speakers and presenters, both international and local, to the powerful Youth Forum on the opening day; the Murrinbidja Trade Fair with over 40 individual stands, the wonderful gala dinner and the amazing array of Indigenous artists who contributed to the entertainment component of the event. It was an amazing three days.
Many valuable outcomes were achieved through Yulkuum-Jerrang. Most notably the Declaration of Kinship between Indigenous people of Australia, Canada and New Zealand. This Resolution between the three countries is based on culture, economic development and justice. The KBN and the Victorian Aboriginal Chamber of Commerce have been given responsibility for the development of the Resolution.
KBN is currently documenting the many positive outcomes and benefits of Yulkuum-Jerrang with the aim of producing a comprehensive report which will soon be available on this website.
A very big thank you to everyone involved in the development and organisation of Yulkuum-Jerrang! Your contributions have been vital to the success of this event and your support is greatly appreciated.
