Julie Satur has a background as a dental therapist having graduated in Melbourne in 1977. She spent around 18 years working for the Victorian School Dental Service as a field dental therapist and, in management, the dental health education unit and as a community project officer designing and implementing the Waverly Preschool Dental program.
In 1996 Julie completed a Masters degree in Health Promotion and Health Education and in 2003 she completed a Doctor of Philosophy with a thesis entitled Australian dental policy reform and the use of dental therapists and hygienists. She was also the first dental therapist appointed to the Dental Practice Board of Victoria and has been actively involved in advocating for dental public health and dental therapy over a number of years in many settings including the Auditor Generals' review of Community Dental Programs in Victoria.
In 1994 Julie moved into the education area, initially as a lecturer in the Dental Therapy School in Melbourne and in 1996 was the first dental therapist appointed to a University Dental School when the Diploma in Oral Health Therapy began at the University of Melbourne. Julie has been involved in curriculum development for dental therapy and dental hygiene for both the Diploma and the Bachelor of Oral Health.
Julie has had a keen interest in developing the oral health therapy professions at both policy and association level. She has been a member of the Victorian Dental Therapists Association since its inception, holding the positions of Vice-President and President during the 1990s, and also as its delegate to the ADOHTA. She is editor of the ADOHTA Journal and is a member of the National Advisory Committee on Oral Health, the National Oral Heath Promotion Steering Group and the Colgate Global Child Oral Health Program.
She currently lectures in Oral Health Promotion, Health Education, Health Policy and Ethics, Community Health Studies and Research Methods at the University of Melbourne. To date her research has been in the areas of school canteens, preschool oral health, practice regulation and evidence based oral health promotion. She also spends one day a week working in a private orthodontic practice.
Pam holds qualifications in both dental therapy and dental hygiene. Currently, she works in a specialist periodontal practice, the dental unit of the Royal Children's Hospital and in a rural private practice. Pam also holds a lecturer position at the School of Dental Science, University of Melbourne. She has experience in specialist orthodontic practice and has held both management and clinical positions in Community Dental Services and the School Dental Service. Pam has a keen interest in public dentistry and the education and development of Oral Health Therapy Students and is a former President of the Victorian Dental Therapist Association.
Richard graduated with B.D.S. from Sydney University in 1988, and worked in private practice until 2001.He returned to university to study a Grad Diploma in Forensic Odontology. Richard currently works as consultant forensic odontologist at the Victorian Institute Forensic Medicine plus teaching part time at Melbourne University and Monash University. He additionally lectures to Victorian Police on a regular basis. Richard's forensic experience includes general identification case work at VIFM, analysis of bite-marks, examination of child abuse victims and sexual assault victims, attendance at various local and international mass disasters, including Bali bombings, Tsunami, and most recently the Kerang train disaster. Richard is currently studying for the Diploma of Medical Jurisprudence, an international medico-legal qualification, which he hopes to complete in 2008.
Cathryn graduated as dux of her Dental Hygiene course in Adelaide in 1989, where she was honoured to receive the Oral B Foundation Award for excellence in preventive dentistry.
Cathryn's 18 year career in dental hygiene has covered many facets of dental hygiene care including experience in general practice, orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics and special needs dentistry. Cathryn has practiced as a hygienist in Adelaide, Brisbane and Ballarat as well as Neuss (Germany) and Wellington (New Zealand). She is currently in private practice in Wangaratta in North East Victoria.
In 2006 Cathryn joined Colgate Oral Care as part of the Professional Educator Network. Cathryn is involved in presenting modules covering key oral hygiene topics in the Bachelor of Oral Health Science and Pharmacy curriculums at La Trobe University (Bendigo Campus).
In 2004 the Hume Hygiene project was founded by Cathryn, as a result of a Women's Community Leadership Grant and support from the DHAA Inc and Colgate. In 2005 Hume Hygiene was awarded a grant from Dental Health Services Victoria for "Dental Dreaming" an Indigenous oral health promotion project.
Cathryn has been a member of the Dental Hygienists' Association of Australia since 1988. Serving on executive committees in South Australia and Queensland. Currently she is librarian for the DHAA (Victorian Branch) and alternate National Councillor. In 2006 Cathryn accepted a position on the Dental Practice Board of Victoria's Regional Reference Group for Continuing Professional Development.
Dr Melinda Newnham graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1995 with a Bachelor of Dental Science and went to work in rural private practice for 18 months before heading to the UK. She worked in London for two years as a general dentist, including a brief stint as a volunteer aid worker in Chennai, India where she developed her interest in Periodontics. Upon returning to Australia, she was awarded fellowship to the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (2004), and completed her postgraduate study in Periodontics (2006).
Dr Newnham has been actively involved in teaching and lecturing to undergraduate dental and hygiene students, Australian Dental Council (ADC) examination candidates and general dentists through continuing professional development courses, both through the University of Melbourne and the Asia Pacific Institute of Dental Education and Research (AIDER). She was also recently awarded the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP) medallion (2007).
Dr Newnham is a current a member of the Australian Dental Association, International Team for Implantology (ITI), ANZAP, Australian Society of Periodontists (ASP) and the Australasian Osseointegration Society (AOS). Dr Newnham enjoys all aspects of periodontics, including non-surgical and surgical management of periodontal disease, soft tissue augmentation, aesthetics and implant therapy.
Dr Nick Cusack is a graduate of the University and Queensland and completed a Graduate Diploma in Dental Studies at the University of Western Australia in 2001. He is currently completing a Master of Philosophy Research Degree with the Centre for Military and Veterans' Health co-located at the University of Queensland Medical School and is a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. His current project involves investigating the lifestyle dental risk of young people in the military. He maintains a group practice in the CBD of Brisbane and continues to be involved with the military through a teaching role at the ADF Dental School.
Peter Mackley, Managing Director of Essology has had quite a diverse background, from civil engineering to the dental industry. Peter has more than 10 years experience in the dental industry. He has setup and managed new businesses in the Middle East, Asia whilst maintaining Australia and New Zealand. He is actively involved with the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry and currently sits on the Board of Directors.

Professor Marc Tennant is the founding Director of the Centre for Rural and Remote Oral Health at The University of Western Australia. This is a unique centre has given Western Australia leadership in addressing the issues associated with rural, remote and Indigenous oral health in Australia.
Following completion of his Doctorate in the early 1990's Marc's research moved from vascular biology to focus for the last 5-10 years on rural, remote and Indigenous oral health with more than 150 publications to his name, and as an invited national and international speaker. Marc's total research grant income exceeds $10million. The Centre for Rural and Remote Oral Health is the leading peer review publisher of research in oral health in Western Australia.
Marc, after relinquishing his role as Director of Operations and Deputy Head of School at the Dental School in Perth went on to be Inaugural Head of School and Clinical Dean at Griffith University's new dental school where he remains an Adjunct Professor.
Marc is now Professor and Inaugural Head of Department at La Trobe University in Victoria where he is leading the start-up of another new dental program. This development has already seen oral health therapy commence and the prospect of dentistry starting in the new year. It has been supported by the State of Victoria to the tune of more than $15million.
Marc's innovation activities in oral health education are sort after across Australia; he is currently consulting to James Cook University and Charles Sturt University on the development of new regional based dental schools for Queensland and New South Wales.
Marc has been a key participant in nearly a quarter of a billion dollars worth of capital projects in dental service and education in Australia and overseas.
Marc also consults to a number of Sate governments on addressing serious oral health issues in the government sector.
Mark graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science with Honours from the University of Western Australia in 2001. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy as a Dental Officer, and has worked at various military dental centres around Australia, including Rockingham (WA), Cairns, Jervis Bay, and Melbourne. In 2006, Mark completed a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Conscious Sedation and Pain Control) from the University of Sydney, and now practises intravenous sedation in addition to clinical dentistry.
Mark's current position is as Head of the Australian Defence Force Dental School, based at HMAS CERBERUS, approximately 80km south of Melbourne, a position he has held for the last two years. In this role, he is directly responsible to Navy, Army and Air Force for providing training in Dental Assisting, Dental Technology and Dental Hygiene, and has had comprehensive experience in developing training pathways for dental auxiliaries in the ADF. While this role is largely administrative, he still tries to find time to teach students as well as see patients for both sedation and clinical dentistry when he is able. In this capacity, he also represents the ADF on several state and national training advisory groups, and was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander in January of this year.
What little spare time Mark has is spent rehearsing and performing overseas and around Melbourne. He regularly performs on piano locally, mainly in association with the Theatre Organ Society of Victoria, and his talent on the bagpipes takes him overseas every year to play at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, as well as playing and adjudicating at Australian-based competitions throughout the year.
Mark travels to La Trobe University one day a week, where he is a clinical tutor in the second-year clinic at the Anne Caudle centre, and lecturer to both first and second year students. He is also the Chair of the curriculum advisory panel for the La Trobe Dentistry course which will start next year.
Andrew is a dentist working as a senior policy advisor in Department of Human Services, focussing on extending water fluoridation in Victoria. This work sees him travelling around the State to ensure that the Government's policy of extending water fluoridation is successful.
Andrew continues to work 1 day/week in a clinical role at Inner South Community Health Service where he has worked for almost 10 years. This work focusses mainly upon providing care to people with special needs, particularly people who are medically-compromised and those with severe psychiatric disability.
Maggie was born and works in the U.K and has been a registered hygienist for 45 years. Now in her early 60's, enthusiastic about her work she endeavours to inspire others with her enthusiasm and has built an enviable reputation as a clinician and an opinion former in the UK profession as a whole.
Maggie was awarded a Master of Philosophy in Dentistry degree from Leeds University. Maggie works in two specialist periodontal practices in the UK as team leader and as a part- time research hygienist on a number of trials. She has used her findings to design a new interdental brush for the treatment and control of interdental periodontal pocketing.
She has 'advanced trained' hygienists in the treatment of periodontal diseases, is constantly in demand as a speaker in many venues and was the first hygienist to speak at Stafford Miller's 'Talking Points' road show all over the UK.
