Monash University is the largest university in Australia with some 56,000 students studying across six campuses in the state of Victoria. It also has two international campuses in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Johannesburg (South Africa), in addition to which a new Medical School has been opened in Johor Baru (Malaysia). Monash also runs research and teaching programs in Prato (Italy) and with Kings' College London (UK) and has various international linkages with leading universities in China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Latin America, the USA and the EU. In June 2007, Monash University will enrol its first doctoral students in a joint Ph.D science/technology program as part of its new educational partnership with the IIT Bombay, an initiative supported by the governments and corporate sector of Australia and India.
Monash is committed to research and teaching excellence, as a result of which it is a trusted name in Asia and internationally. It offers more than $20 million a year in scholarships and is internationally famous for its work on IVF technologies, flu and HIV/AIDS vaccines. It currently hosts the site of the largest and most up to date synchrotron in the southern hemisphere. Its research in the social sciences, engineering, law etc is equally well known with Monash specialists working closely with international authorities to understand terrorism, pollution, and poverty.
