The Monash Asia Institute, Monash University (MAI) is one of ten of Monash University's centrally funded research centres. The Institute also works closely with government and companies in generating world class research on Asia - for example the MAI recently completed a report for the Australian aid agency (Ausaid) on the religious schools (madrassas) of Pakistan, Bangladesh and India.
It has a vigorous postgraduate program of some 20 doctoral students and teaches the Master of Asian Studies and with the EU NOHA consortium the International Masters of Humanitarian Action. The Institute has about 50 research fellows working on various issues ranging from terrorism to non-violent religious philosophies and the medical/nutritional problems of Asia. The Director of the Monash Asia Institute, is the convenor of the 2008 ASAA Conference - Marika Vicziany, Ph.D. SOAS, Uni. London and Professor of Asian Political Economy at Monash University.
The Institute includes six specialist research centres that focus on Southeast Asia, Malaysia, South Asia, China, Japan and Clinical Health and Nutrition. Through these and the Director's section, the Institute has extensive linkages to scholars, governments, NGOs, companies and the media in Asia. The Institute and its centres run a number of seminars, conferences and other events which are advertised in a monthly news bulletin, free to the public.
Monash Asia Institute is also a niche publisher. As an imprint of Monash University Press it publishes a range of books and discussion papers which are distributed world-wide. MAI also hosts two international refereed journals South Asia and the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
