The ASAA was founded in 1976 to promote and support the study of Asia in Australia. Its membership is drawn mainly from academic staff and students at Australian universities, but it also takes a strong interest in Asian Studies and the use of Asia-related materials in schools, governments, NGOs and the media. In recent years it has worked closely with non-university organisations, and in particular has a long history of making submissions to parliamentary inquiries and the educational sector on Asian affairs. The ASAA highly values its international links and encourages the membership of scholars and other experts based outside Australia as well as cooperation with Asian Studies organizations in the region and beyond.
Members of the ASAA are entitled to a special registration rate for the biennial conferences. To join or renew your ASAA membership, obtain a form from here.
The Association supports a journal, The Asian Studies Review, and holds a biennial academic conference which offers members and other scholars the opportunity to hear the latest in research and to develop contacts with other scholars. The Association sponsors four book series, covering Southeast Asia, South Asia, East Asia and Women in Asia, as well as issuing an electronic newsletter, Asian Currents.
