Keynote Speaker

Mr Dennis RossmannMr Dennis Rossmann, South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) - will present on Imperatives in sustaining sprayed sealing practice in the opening ceremony (11 October 2010).

Dennis Rossmann is employed by the South African National Roads Agency as a materials and pavement engineering specialist. Over a career spanning 40 years he has gained considerable experience in the fields of flexible as well as rigid pavement materials, design and construction. Over the last two decades he has been intimately involved in the development of South African national standards and specifications relating to pavement materials and quality assurance. He is currently the chairman of a number of industry committees addressing bituminous products and is the author/co-author of numerous publications covering the fields of design and construction of spray seals, modified bitumens, concrete pavement construction as well as construction quality assurance.

Technical Tour

ARRB and VicRoads are pleased to offer a technical tour for the 2nd International Sprayed Sealing Conference. The tour will take place on Sunday 10 October 2010, will commence from the Conference venue, and include lunch. The tour is planned to commence at 11.30 am (to be confirmed). This tour is at an additional nominal cost to delegates. Places for the tour are limited. If you wish to participate, please ensure you indicate so when registering.

This tour will showcase a visit to ARRB’s research facilities in Vermont South, where participants will have an opportunity to tour ARRB’s bitumen laboratories and see the sprayer nozzle test rig.

The tour will also visit the ARRB full scale pavement testing research laboratory, where participants will see ARRB’s Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) in operation. The ALF simulates heavy vehicle rolling wheel loading through a loaded single, tandem or tri-axle configuration and is currently testing a two coat emulsion seal on a granular base.

The tour will also include a demonstration of a spray run using the French synchronised spraying / spreading method.

Participants will be invited to test their skill at identifying a correct aggregate spread rate from examples on display.

Conference Dinner

The conference dinner is being held on Monday 11 October at the Plaza Ballroom in the Regent Theatre.

The Plaza Ballroom is a magnificent heritage listed venue situated in the very heart of Melbourne on Collins Street, below the famous Regent Theatre.  The Plaza Ballroom is a breathtaking, meticulously restored ballroom which has Spanish Rococo architecture.  The Regent Theatre was opened in 1929 and underwent a full restoration in 1993 which took three years of meticulous craftsmanship, under David Marriner’s watchful eye, to bring the Regent and the Plaza Ballroom back to their former breathtaking glory.

Trade exhibition

As part of the 2nd International Sprayed Sealing Conference, delegates will be able to attend a trade exhibition with suppliers of products and services relating to the road and transport industry.  The trade exhibition will include a number of demonstrations, competitions and 'hands-on' activities to learn more about current best practice in Australia and overseas.
