Professor & Chair, Division of Medical Physics
Department of Radiation Oncology
Virginia Commonwealth University

Jeffrey F. Williamson, Ph.D. received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Medical Physics from the University of Minnesota’s Biophysical Sciences Program.  He is currently chairman of the Medical Physics Division and Professor of Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University and previously served on the faculties of University of Minnesota, University of Arizona, and Washington University.  Dr. Williamson has made many contributions to brachytherapy, including Monte Carlo applications to dosimetry and treatment planning, experimental dosimetry techniques, and quality assurance.  As past Chair of the AAPM’s Photon-Emitting Brachytherapy-Dosimetry Subcommittee, he played a key role in standardizing low-energy interstitial seed dosimetry in North America.  The programs in brachytherapy QA and remotely afterloaded brachytherapy he established at Washington University became the basis of American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Task Group reports 56 and 59.  He has also served on AAPM Task Groups 32, 43, 100, and 186.  In addition, Dr. Williamson is Principle Investigator of funded research programs in quantitative CT imaging, CT image reconstruction, and image-guided radiation therapy.  He has authored or coauthored approximately 225 papers, book chapters, and proceedings and has trained over 30 post-doctoral research fellows and Ph.D. students.  Dr. Williamson is a Fellow of both the AAPM and American College of Radiology.  He lives in Richmond, VA with his wife Susan W.
